The training was prompted by an improvement notice from the Nairobi County Disaster Management Department. It was also recommended by the National Council for Persons with Disabilities following their accessibility audit of the university.
Mr. Sungu emphasized the importance of equipping staff with fire safety knowledge which is essential for preventing fire outbreaks and ensuring effective response during emergencies. He acknowledged that the Accommodation and Catering Services Department plays a pivotal role in safeguarding student welfare and the overall campus experience.
The participants were trained on the common causes and progression of fires, appropriate use of various fire extinguishers, principles of fire suppression, fire classifications, and the correct interpretation of campus safety signage. Further, they were also trained on proactive fire prevention measures, and staff were encouraged to regularly assess fire risks, identify suitable protection equipment, and maintain awareness of emergency exits and assembly points.
In addition, Mr. Sungu outlined the five stages of the disaster management cycle, which are; prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and rehabilitation. He underscored the importance of timely and informed action during the response phase to minimize harm.
Fire safety training is being implemented across departments and directorates in the university. Staff from Maintenance, Procurement, Caretaker Services and the Library have already been trained. The initiative signifies TU-Kâs ongoing dedication to uphold national safety standards and cultivate a safe and supportive environment for all members of the university community.
