The transition was formalized during a handover ceremony held at the University Library on March 27, 2026, symbolizing the beginning of a new chapter in union leadership. The event was organized and facilitated by newly elected Branch Executive Committee (BEC) representatives Vincent Murey and Ogutu Patrick Ochieng.

The ceremony brought together KUSU members from various departments, alongside representatives from KUDHEIHA, UASU, the Welfare Office, Human Resources, and the Vice Chancellor’s office, as outgoing KUSU officials formally handed over leadership to the incoming team.

Leadership demands responsibility and strategic action

Outgoing officials used the platform to highlight the realities of union leadership, describing it as both demanding and service oriented. They emphasised that the new officials now carry the responsibility of representing all members and must rise above campaign divisions to deliver effectively.

Incoming officials were urged to adopt a measured and strategic approach to decision-making, avoid emotionally driven actions in favour of consultation, dialogue, and professionalism. The importance of accountability was also stressed, with members encouraged to actively engage and keep the officials responsive to emerging issues.

Outgoing Branch Secretary Andrew Musungu underscored the need to prioritise members’ welfare, noting that effective unionism is rooted in protection, advocacy, and constructive engagement.

“Negotiation, consultation, and discussion achieve far more than confrontation. Let us always put members first.”

Key priorities for the new leadership

Several pressing issues were identified as critical areas of focus for the incoming teams:

  • Ensuring fairness and transparency in staff promotions
  • Addressing long-standing concerns around pension contributions and safeguarding progress made
  • Strengthening collaboration with sister unions to enhance collective bargaining efforts
  • Promoting a professional and inclusive working environment for all staff

Outgoing officials noted that while notable progress had been made during their tenure, there remains unfinished business that requires commitment and continuity from the new leadership.
